A Wonderful Gift From Nature
True Story
I did not expect Belize to be this easy.
When I hear “international trip,” my brain immediately starts making things complicated. Customs. Connections. Transportation. Currency. Passports. Questions like, “Do I need special shoes for this?” which is apparently something I worry about now.
But this past March, my husband and I went to Belize and stayed at Mahogany Bay Resort on San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, and I have to say, Belize surprised me in the best possible way. It felt tropical and relaxing, but still easy. It felt international, but not intimidating. It felt quiet, but not boring. It was beautiful without being so fancy that I felt like I had to whisper near the palm trees.
Basically, it was exactly the kind of trip I want more of in this empty nest season: a little adventure, a little sunshine, a little “wait, why haven’t we done this before?”
Why Belize Is Such a Good Empty Nest Trip
There are some trips that sound amazing but require the emotional energy of planning a military operation. Belize was not that, and honestly, that might be one of the biggest reasons I loved it.
At this stage of life, I want adventure, but I also want easy. I want beautiful places, but I do not want to spend the first two days of vacation recovering from getting there. I want a trip that feels special without requiring 17 open laptop tabs and a spreadsheet named “vacation logistics final FINAL.”
Belize checked a lot of boxes for us. Warm weather. Blue water. Friendly people. Good food. Easy transportation. A relaxed island pace. And maybe best of all, it felt manageable. It felt like a real getaway, not a travel obstacle course.

Getting to Belize Was Easier Than I Expected
Let’s start here, because this was one of my biggest surprises. Belize is surprisingly easy to get to from the United States, with direct flights available from several major city hubs. Depending on where you live and the time of year, you may be able to find a flight that makes the whole trip feel very doable.
And that is a big deal, because the older I get, the less interested I am in sprinting through airports with a carry-on, a half-charged phone, and a granola bar I packed in a moment of optimism.
We flew into Belize City first, then made our way to San Pedro on Ambergris Caye on a water ferry (about an hour and a half). You can get there by a short local flight or by water taxi, so yes, there are a few logistics, but they were easy to navigate. They were more like, “Oh, this is part of the adventure” logistics. Once you start heading toward the island, everything shifts. The water shows up, the pace slows down, and your shoulders start to drop.

Small Island Feel
San Pedro is on Ambergris Caye, and it had such a different feel from the bigger, busier beach destinations we have visited. It felt smaller, quieter, and more casual, but not sleepy. There are still restaurants, shops, excursions, music, golf carts everywhere, and plenty to do if you want to do something.
What I loved most was that it did not feel overwhelming. It felt like a place where you could wander a little, explore a little, eat something good, and then head back to the resort and pretend you are the kind of person who always lives this peacefully.
Which, sadly, I am not.
But I did enjoy pretending.
There is something really nice about being somewhere that does not feel like it is trying too hard. San Pedro has that island rhythm: slower, warmer, and a little more “we’ll get there when we get there.” After years of living by calendars, bells, pickups, practices, appointments, and reminders, that felt pretty wonderful.
